First, I thought that the challenge for English speakers learning Ukrainian lies in the differences in grammar, pronunciation, and the alphabet.
And I could relate – being a post-secondary language instructor who has learned several languages myself, some on my own, others with teachers, and always in search for the best resources. I love learning new languages!
But at some point, it struck me: the real issue wasn’t just the complex grammar, unfamiliar sounds, or the new alphabet. Oh no – it was about how we were learning.
See: when I started in 2016, I was doing my best as teacher, under the guidance and approval of my senior colleagues, but the students seemed to be bored and exhausted (and so was I).
Motivated and curious on my first language lesson, I felt frustrated and scattered very soon after the start – while experienced teachers simply accepted it as the norm.
At this point, I was about ready to give up on learning languages…

The issue was, every piece of advice I was following was wildly outdated. And that’s why the students and I struggled and gave up on learning too soon.
To get to the bottom of it, I tried reading everything—polyglot methods, Western teaching strategies, and pedagogy courses—to understand what works best for learning a language, and specifically Ukrainian.
All of this helped me discover the Immersive Method—and be the first to adapt it to the Ukrainian language and my students’ needs.

Long story short, once I started testing this new method, I suddenly found myself memorizing new words and phrases about 3 times faster than before.

I turned to the communicative method, and starting implementing it into my system became the best decision. Making it interaction-based is exactly what pushed me to actually memorize the languages I was learning long-term, and being able to use what I’ve learned in real life.
I found myself being able to order food in a Spanish restaurant, ask for directions in France, find a job in United States and teach Swedish at several universities, — I mastered the languages I was never spoken in when I was a baby.
The knowledge and experienced I gathered combined with the immersive strategies that were already delivering incredible results, has led me to creation of that space — Immersive Ukrainian wHanna on Youtube.
